CASE STUDY

Contaminated Condensate Heat Recovery

ccheat recovery
Industry

Pharmaceuticals

Background

Condensate from the reactors is drained to cooling tower sump; this is due to possible contamination adding due to operation of different utilities in same reactor jacket.

Highlights
  • Condensate drained due to contamination
Energy Conservation Measure
  • Heat recovery from contaminated condensate
  • Replacement of thermodynamic traps with ball float type
Estimated savings $25,000 USD per annum
  • Boiler Capacity – 6TPH @ 10.5 barg
  • Fuel – Coal
  • Payback – 5 months.
Explanation

Presently the condensate from the reactors is drained to cooling tower sump; this is due to possible contamination adding due to operation of different utilities in same reactor jacket.

However, the quantity of this contaminated condensate is considerable and can be heat recovered to raise the temperature of feed make up water. The contaminated condensate after heat recovery can be sent to water treatment for softener as it has maximum hardness content in it. For online monitoring of TDS of preheated hot water conductivity sensor with auto blowdown valve was also installed.
